Professor Shane Xie

Chair in Robotics and Autonomous System, University of Leeds

Areas of expertise: rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons and orthotics, robotic mechanisms, robots for orthopaedics and sports, industrial robots for high-value manufacturing, and agricultural and underwater robots.

Professor Shane Xie joined the University of Leeds as Chair in Robotics and Autonomous Systems in 2017. He holds degrees in Control Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, and a second PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has more than 30 years of research experience in rehabilitation robotics and exoskeletons. He is Director of the Mechatronics and Robotics programme and Director of the Rehabilitation Robotics Lab at the University of Leeds. Previously, he held academic leadership roles at the University of Auckland and directed the Rehabilitation Robotics Centre there. Professor Xie has led more than 50 funded research projects with a total value exceeding £27 million and has published more than 480 peer-reviewed papers and 8 books. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to mechatronics, rehabilitation robotics, and medical technologies.
